I think the VGMA Board must be dissolved for lack of independence from the organisers of the event, Charter House. The board has to be independent to guarantee the impartiality and merit that awards schemes seem to portray.
As it is now, the VGMA board has a heavy and influential presence of
Charterhouse making them lose focus of the core mandate of using their
technical knowledge to select and nominate musicians who have
distinguished themselves in music works under a particular year under
review to a disciplinary committee.
They are now presiding over insults hurled at them and overlooking
the mission of scrutinizing music by selecting and nominating potential
award winners. Normally an event organiser should not influence the
award scheme and have to just make sure the necessary logistics and
process are set in place.
The organisers, Charter House should appoint a board of
competent professionals in music business, such as, sound engineers,
composers, music presenters, publishers, and a critic etc, who will use
their skill in dealing with the selection and nomination procedure by
allowing the public to vote where they have to and the board also vote
on technical categories which the general public cannot do because of
the lack of knowledge.
Or an academy must be formed, which is more credible since the numbers are larger and the chances of influence is slimmer.
The event organiser, as a duty, should facilitate all these stages and plan how best the event can go on without any hitches.
As it is now, the board chairman of the VGMA is Nii Ayite Hammond, who
is the head of production at Charter House, the CEO and his wife are
also on the board. To top it up, the public relations man, George Quaye
is also a board member.
I think if the organisers should even be represented on the board,
that official shall just be an observer to cater for their welfare. The
board should ideally have a Public Relations Officer selected from
amongst them.
Charter House has thrown all these ethics to the dogs and is
wallowing in a conflict of interest position. They are now the watchdogs
and the gatekeeper there by looks as if they are influencing the board
unduly.
I believe if the board is dissolved and re constituted without
Charterhouse presence, there will be hope for those who believe the
award scheme is not credible.
We are all aware of the court case pending in which Charterhouse has
sued Shattawale for defamation. For me its not surprising Shattawale was
not nominated, since the board chair is a long working senior staff
member.
